The Wall Street financial crisis was the major news of the day, with the Dow Jones on a turbulent ride, setting a new record for the largest single day point loss ever of 777.68 points, following the rejection of the bailout bill in Congress.

The U.S. Attorney firing scandal is back in the news after an internal Justice Department report was released and a special prosecutor, Nora Dannehy, was named to investigate the possibility of filing criminal charges.

The rocket Falcon 1, funded by SpaceX, reached orbit on September 28.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, starts today at sunset.

In celebrity news, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds married in Vancouver, Canada, over the weekend, and Heather Locklear was arrested for drunk driving in Montecito, California.

The big story today was John McCain’s decision to put his campaign for the American presidency on pause in order to focus his attention on the country’s financial system crisis. He asked political rival Barack Obama to join him and to postpone Friday’s presidential debate. Obama refused, saying now is the time to lay out both candidates’ plans in front of voters. The debate is to go on as scheduled.

In NFL news, the president of the Detroit Lions, Matt Millen, was fired after the Lions lost the first three games of the season. The New York Giants suspended Plaxico Burress for two weeks, allegedly for missing practice. Burress will miss one game, against the Seattle Seahawks. Finally, New York Giants radio broadcaster Dick Lynch has died at the age of 72.

Lindsay Lohan is back in the gossip news for her high profile romance with DJ Samantha Ronson. The young actress has confirmed that she is gay and in love with Ronson, who is ten years her senior. Rumors about the pair include their purchasing a New York penthouse together and an impending marriage.

All eyes are still on the path of Hurricane Ike as the storm threatens the residents of Texas towns like Galveston, the community ravaged by a hurricane back in 1900. Texans were urged to evacuate, and the crew of the freighter Antalina is caught in the Gulf and has been notified by the Coast Guard that they’ll have to wait the storm out.

Of course, there’s new Sarah Palin news — her husband, Todd Palin, has been served a subpoena in the ongoing “Troopergate” scandal.

On the celebrity gossip tip…Pink may have become a scientologist! Lindsay Lohan might marry Samantha Ronson! Jennifer Lopez dropped out of the Project Runway finale!

And finally, in sports news, the biggest regular-season college football game of the year takes place tomorrow: perrenial powerhouses USC and Ohio State clash in the Los Angeles Coliseum, and most folks have the Trojans winning big.

Technology and sports topped the news of the day. Apple’s Let’s Rock event promoted several new releases, including iTunes 8 (featuring “Genius“), the iPod Nano 4G and iPhone Firmware 2.1.

The day after the Patriots lost Tom Brady for the season, the Titans’ Vince Young had some problems of his own. After friends were unable to track down the QB, the Titans alerted police in an effort to find him.

Barack Obama found himself in some hot water for his “Lipstick on a Pig” quote, as many see it as a reference to Sarah Palin’s convention quote about hockey moms.

Looking for offbeat news? A thief in Fresno, California, attacked two farmworkers with sausage and spices this week. Apparently, nobody was hurt, though the offending sausage was consumed by a dog before it could be taken as evidence.

The blog world was a-buzz throughout the day with news of Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter, Bristol. She will reportedly be marrying Levi Johnston, the father. Johnston is also scheduled to appear with the Palin’s at the Republican National Convention.

Politics wasn’t the only gossip of the day, however. News also broke of a potential relationship between Anne Hathaway and Josh Lucas. We are also saddened to report that we now live in a world without voice-over performer Don LaFontaine.

This week has also seen some new episodes of popular shows. The Gossip Girl season premiere and the Prison Break season premiere both aired on Labor Day.

The news on Friday was dominated by national politics. The night after Barack Obama’s Democratic nomination acceptance speech, John McCain announced his running mate, Alaskan governor Sarah Palin. A more controversial selection than it may have been a few weeks ago, Palin is under investigation by the state of Alaska for alleged abuse of powers.

In celebrity news, American Idol Carrie Underwood and Michael Phelps are set to go on a date. Sources say that Phelps is “smitten” with the country singer.

The New York Times printed a Fake Diary by Woody Allen, promoting his new film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The diary pokes fun at the accommodations in Barcelona and Allen’s own reputation as a fan of young women.

Actor David Duchovny suffers from sexual addiction. He has entered a rehabilitation facility seeking treatment.

Music lovers can soon pick up a new set of Hohner harmonicas designed by Bob Dylan. These limited edition titles will be called the Bob Dylan signature series.

Our front page featured the 2008 Democratic Convention, and the big news of Hillary Clinton’s Convention speech.

In breaking news, a fire in Calabasas, California forced some people to evacuate their homes. Computer problems at the FAA caused multiple flight delays. And Hurricane Gustav continued on its projected path towards Cuba.

Some more famous names were in the news: Brad Pitt reportedly photographed Angelina Jolie and their children for the cover of W Magazine. NBA All-Star Kevin Duckworth’s death was a blow to many fans. And John Edwards may be calling supporters to ask their forgiveness for lying about his affair.
